New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday that the city will host a ticker tape parade on July 7 to honor health care workers, first responders, and essential workers.

Why it matters: It will be the city's first official parade since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, de Blasio said. The announcement comes as the city prepares to fully reopen on July 1.

The big picture: The parade will include floats and groups of essential workers marching along the Canyon of Heroes route through downtown Manhattan, per CNN.

What they're saying: "[T]he first true large parade in New York City will be one to celebrate the heroes of the fight against COVID, our health care heroes who were extraordinary and need to be remembered for the ages, our first responders, our essential workers, the people who kept us alive, that people who kept the city going no matter what," said de Blasio.

  • "No one is going to ever forget those we lost and what families are still going through. But we need a day to celebrate the heroism of every-day New Yorkers."

Brazilian Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga has tested positive for COVID-19 while in New York City for the UN General Assembly (UNGA), he confirmed Tuesday night.

Why it matters: Hours earlier, Queirog had accompanied Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to the UNGA. The Biden administration expressed concern last week that the gathering of world leaders could become a coronavirus "superspreader event."

President Biden will receive his COVID booster shot on camera once it's fully approved for Americans ages 65 and older, the White House said Monday.

Why it matters: A federal advisory panel unanimously voted last week to recommend that the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) authorize a third dose of Pfizer's vaccine for people over the age of 65 and those at higher risk of infection.
