Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker (R) issued an executive order Thursday that requires executive department employees to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination on or by Oct. 17.

Why it matters: Baker's order comes as other Republican governors push back on vaccine and masks mandates.

The big picture: Massachusetts officials will roll out more information about the verification process in the coming weeks, Baker's office said in a press release.

  • The policy applies to both on-site and remote employees, and failure to comply will be "subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination."
  • Exemptions will be granted for medical or sincere religious reasons.
  • The executive order applies to those employed in a "Commonwealth executive department agency, bureau department, office, or division of the Commonwealth."

Of note: Once the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention establishes guidelines for booster shots, employees will be required to receive those as well, the press release notes.

A judge on Friday issued a temporary restraining order against the Chicago police union president, barring him from making statements discouraging members from reporting their COVID-19 vaccine status to the city, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The big picture: The order came just hours before the deadline for Chicago city employees to report their vaccination status, but city officials said it would take days for them to determine who got shots and who did not, according to ABC 7 Chicago.

Minnesota offers cash and chance at $100K scholarship as vaccine incentive for teens

Minnesota is offering new incentives to shot-wary teens in an effort to boost the state's COVID-19 vaccination rates.

Driving the news: 12 to 17 year olds who get both doses over the next six weeks will receive a $200 Visa gift card, Gov. Tim Walz's administration announced Monday.

  • Kids vaccinated during this period can also enter a lottery for one of five $100,000 scholarships to attend any of the state's public or private colleges or universities.

Why it matters: Public health officials say increasing vaccination rates among young Minnesotans is key to curbing spread of the virus, especially in schools.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) extended a drought emergency declaration to cover the entire state on Tuesday.

Why it matters: "California is experiencing its worst drought since the late 1800s, as measured by both lack of precipitation and high temperatures," per a statement from the governor's office. This past August was the driest and hottest one on record, "and the water year that ended last month was the second driest on record," the statement added.
