More than 30 major companies have promised to hire and train Afghan refugees coming to the U.S., per a press release from the Tent Partnership for Refugees, the group spearheading the effort.

The big picture: The 33 companies, including Amazon, Facebook, Pfizer and UPS, are joining the Tent Coalition for Afghan Refugees, a coalition founded by Hamdi Ulukaya, the founder and CEO of food company Chobani.

  • An initial group of 37,000 Afghans arrived in the U.S. this month and are heading to states across the country.

Driving the news: Amazon said it will offer refugees jobs in the company's warehouses or transportation hubs and in tech and corporate roles. The company will also pay for training and education programs.

  • Pfizer's efforts to include Afghans in the workforce range from "hiring them into our workforce, to mentoring Afghan refugees and preparing them for their new workplaces," per CEO Albert Bourla.

What they're saying: "I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again — the moment a refugee gets a job, it’s the moment they stop being a refugee," Ulukaya said in a statement.

  • "It’s the moment they can stand on their own two feet; it’s the moment they can make new friends; it’s the moment they can start a new life."

Report: Amazon shortchanged workers on leave

Amazon employees allege that they have been shortchanged pay while on leave, according to a New York Times investigation published Sunday.

Why it matters: Much of the recent spotlight on Amazon — along with Google, Apple and Facebook — has been over competition and privacy, but labor concerns have been growing across the industry as well.

Biden says presidency "will be determined" by outcome of spending plans

President Biden told the House Democratic caucus Thursday "my presidency will be determined" by the votes he wants in the next week on his $1.75 trillion social safety net expansion and $1.2 trillion infrastructure package.

Driving the news: Biden made the comment, according to a source in the room, as he tried to rally support for the $1.75 trillion package. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi acted immediately, calling for a vote on the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill later in the day.

China declines to speed emissions cuts in new UN pledge

Chinese leaders are sticking with a prior target to bring the country's carbon emissions to a peak before 2030, according to documents filed with the United Nations Thursday under the Paris climate agreement.

Why it matters: The new documents come just days ahead of the UN climate summit (COP26) in Glasgow. China is by far the world's largest greenhouse gas emitter, and its emissions path is key to whether the temperature-limiting goals of the Paris agreement can remain within reach.
