Chicago public health officials said Thursday that there is "no evidence at this point" to suggest that Lollapalooza was a superspreader event, with a total of 203 coronavirus cases identified so far.

By the numbers: Chicago’s Public Health commissioner Allison Arwady said that of the estimated 385,000 attendees, over 90% were vaccinated. She added that 0.04% of vaccinated attendees reported testing positive for the virus.

  • 0.16% of unvaccinated attendees tested positive.
  • No hospitalizations or deaths have been reported as of Wednesday.

Of the 203 total cases that have been reported, 58 were Chicago residents, 138 were non-Chicago Illinois residents and seven lived outside of the state.

What they're saying: "We've had no unexpected findings at this point. There’s no evidence at this point of a superspreader event, and there's no evidence of substantial impact to Chicago's COVID epidemiology," Arwady said during a news conference.

  • Chicago is still seeing a rise in cases. New cases are up by 39% since last week, and COVID-related hospital visits are up by 6%, per ABC Chicago.

The big picture: The festival was held at full capacity between July 29 and Aug. 1 after it was canceled last year due to the pandemic. To attend, guests had to be fully vaccinated or have a negative test taken within three days prior to attendance.

  • Unvaccinated individuals needed to wear a mask.

Of note: Several musicians and concert workers have been urging fans to get vaccinated so that live events can continue to take place, Insider reports.

Cases and deaths from COVID-19 among workers at the five largest U.S. meatpacking companies were nearly three times higher than previously thought, according to a memo from the House panel probing the response to the pandemic.

Driving the news: At least 59,000 workers contracted COVID-19 and 269 workers died at Tyson Foods, JBS USA, Cargill, National Beef and Smithfield Foods — which together make up more than 80% of the beef market and 60% of the pork market in the U.S. — according to counts through January of this year.

NYC firefighters union urges members to defy mayor's vaccine mandate

The president of New York City's firefighters' union told reporters Wednesday that he's advised unvaccinated members to ignore Mayor Bill de Blasio's COVID-19 vaccine mandate for city workers, per Reuters.

Why it matters: Under De Blasio's order that's due to take effect Friday, unvaccinated city employees would be placed on unpaid leave. But Uniformed Firefighters Association head Andrew Ansbro said he told members that "if they choose to remain unvaccinated, they must still report for duty," according to Reuters.

Judge rejects Southwest pilots' challenge to vaccine mandate

A judge ruled that Southwest Airlines can mandate its 9,000 pilots to be vaccinated against COVID-19, declining a union request for a restraining order on the policy, per AP.

Details: U.S. District Judge Barbara Lynn said in her ruling against the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association on Tuesday that the airline was meeting its goal on air transportation safety and "providing 'safe and reasonable working conditions' for pilots, by preventing the spread of disease" with the requirement, the Dallas Morning News noted.
