The Washington Capitals unveiled their new Hometown Remix jerseys Monday, and the sweaters are packed with nods to D.C.'s architecture, history and culture.
Why it matters: Following the NBA's City Edition and MLB's City Connect programs, the NHL is getting into the game of alternate uniforms designed to stoke civic pride (and maybe sell some merch).
Zoom in: The Capitol dome crest, the team's primary logo for part of the 2000s, is front and center.
- The Screaming Eagle, a throwback-turned-alternate logo, appears on the shoulders.
- The shoulders and sleeves feature a marble pattern inspired by the city's monuments.
- Numbers share a look with the monuments' etched, beveled letters.
- A subtle cherry blossom design runs along the hemline.
- The uniform's base color is "Potomac Blue," part of a wintry palette meant to evoke the scenery of Great Falls.
Behind the scenes: The Capitals considered several design directions during a collaborative process with Fanatics and the NHL, Capitals Senior Vice President of Marketing Amanda Tischler told Axios.
- Tischler's favorite detail is the marble pattern. While scouting the Library of Congress for a promotional photo shoot, her team noticed similar marble textures throughout the building.
What's ahead: The Caps will debut the uniform Saturday against the Florida Panthers and wear it for 10 other home games this season.
- Themed giveaways include a rally towel Saturday and an Alex Ovechkin bobblehead Jan. 12.
- Fans can buy the jerseys at Capital One Arena, MedStar Capitals Iceplex and online.
