Rising women's golf stars tee off at historic Langston

Langston Golf Course has long been a hub for Black golfers in D.C. This week, a new generation of pros competes there.

The big picture: Sapphire Golf Tour — a women's pro golf circuit spotlighting emerging Black and Latina players — is holding its championship at Langston through Saturday.

The tour aims to create a pathway for women historically underrepresented in professional golf.
Only eight Black women have earned LPGA Tour membership in its more than 75-year history.

Zoom in: Ten golfers will compete Friday and Saturday for the tour's $10,000 purse, with $4,000 going to the winner.

Saturday also features a free junior golf clinic for kids ages 8-18.

If you go: The tour is offering 500 free spectator tickets. Youth and college students get in free.
