How to volunteer around D.C. for 9/11 Day of Service

Sept. 11 is a National Day of Service and Remembrance, with several ways to pitch in around the DMV.

The big picture: More than 2,000 volunteers will gather at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center Friday to pack over 700,000 meals for the Capital Area Food Bank, according to organizers.

The main packing event is full, with limited space on the event support team, but there are other ways to get involved on 9/11 Day's nationwide "Unite For Good" initiative, including:

👟 "Districts for Dignity: The Period Games" at Gaithersburg's Bohrer Park combines games and a walk with assembling menstrual kits for people in need.

Friday, 5:30–7:30pm in Gaithersburg. Students can earn SSL hours.

🌳 Trail maintenance at Leopold's Preserve in Broad Run, Virginia, including clearing brush and invasive plants.

Sunday, Sept. 13, 1–3pm

Plus, other ways to get involved:

🇺🇸 Honor through service: Volunteer at veterans cemeteries across Maryland and Virginia on Saturday at 10am cleaning headstones and beautifying the grounds in remembrance of 9/11.
