Tudor Place Historic House & Garden in Georgetown is running a special exhibit to celebrate America's birthday.

Why it matters: This under-the-radar museum — once home to descendants of Martha Washington — is a way for history buffs to get their 250 on without battling the crowds at the city's bigger cultural sites.

State of play: "Founding Fortunes" showcases over 60 items tied to an estate sale of Martha Washington's possessions held during the early 1800s, many of which are on view for the first time.

Think: Pieces of George Washington's hair, Martha Washington's bodice, a camp stool Washington used during the Revolutionary War, and a Mount Vernon punch bowl.

Zoom out: The museum will also host a series of 250-centric events throughout the rest of the year, like historian talks and after-hours gatherings over coffee cocktails inspired by Colonial-era meeting places.
