Exclusive: Maryland, Virginia senators demand Trump's East Potomac golf plans

Driving the news: In a letter obtained by Axios, the four Democrats, led by Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen, asked Interior Secretary Doug Burgum on Wednesday to explain:

• How the future course's fees will remain affordable for locals
• How public access for bikers and joggers around Hains Point will be preserved
• How the administration plans to remediate "hazardous substances identified" in debris trucked to the site
• How they'll protect the historic cherry trees on the land, believed to be the last surviving ones from Japan's original gift in 1910.
• Whether the revamp will rebuild the seawall and how it'll get funded

What they're saying: Van Hollen sits on a committee overseeing Burgum's department, which he says "has still not provided Congress or the public with basic details about the scope of the project."

Catch up quick: Trump recently said that the federal government will begin renovating the course on Sept. 1.

• The announcement followed a June 28 visit to the site, where photos showed him carrying mockups depicting a redesigned layout that appeared to extend into areas currently used by cyclists and joggers.
• In an ongoing lawsuit, a judge hasn't yet intervened to stop Trump's plans, but also hasn't dismissed the challenge.
