Where to watch D.C. July 4 fireworks away from the National Mall

State of play: Here are some alternative spots to catch the fireworks around D.C.:

🌊 Anacostia Park: This green space in Southeast will host its own fireworks show to celebrate America's birthday. TBD on time, although it's expected they will run alongside the National Mall show.

🚴‍♂️ Mount Vernon Trail: Bike or walk (or run! Or Lime scooter!) the trail that stretches from Mount Vernon to Roosevelt Island, pick your fireworks spot — as far away from other people as you'd like — and look up from there.

🌳 Lady Bird Johnson Park: You can drive to this island in the Potomac River, or you can get here via the Mount Vernon Trail. Pack snacks — there are picnic tables, too.

🔔 Netherlands Carillon: The Arlington tower — a gift from the Dutch to the U.S. after World War II — is perched on a hill overlooking the Potomac, aka primo fireworks-watching views.

🎓 Cardozo Education Campus: The school sits on a hill off Florida Avenue in Columbia Heights, meaning you can peep the fireworks downtown without actually elbowing your way through there.
