For one day in July, Washingtonians will get access to an under-the-radar building steps away from the White House that's filled with artifacts spanning American history.

Why it matters: It's a chance for anyone to visit The Howard T. Markey National Courts Building complex, which houses the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and is normally reserved for scheduled student tours.

State of play: "Justice Up Close, History All Around" is a one-day exhibit honoring America's 250th that will take place July 3 at the Federal Circuit Center for Innovation & Law.

Inside, visitors can learn about the building's past as Dolley Madison's home, an essential site for the women's suffrage movement, and NASA's first headquarters. (And see a moon rock!)

Plus: Hang with historical interpreters portraying Madison and abolitionist Paul Jennings, try your hand at a mock trial, and meet federal judges.

Catch up quick: The center opened in 2025 and uses interactive exhibits to show the relationship between civics, technology, history and science.

The bottom line: After July 3, the space will return to school group-access only — visit while you can.
