Janeese Lewis George's top rival concedes in D.C. mayoral race

Council member Lewis George's 16-point lead spans citywide — up everywhere but affluent Ward 3.

• The AP had not yet called the race with an estimated 27% of the votes uncounted. The Board of Elections is still processing mail-in ballots.
• Lewis George's lead at 53% was unchanged after a new batch of votes were reported yesterday. McDuffie has 37%.

What he's saying: "While the final certification process will continue, it is clear that the voters have chosen a different path," McDuffie said in a statement.

The big picture: Lewis George ran on expanding child care subsidies for families and lowering electricity bills, along with an ambitious plan to build 72,000 homes in five years.

• Though Trump wasn't central to her message, his 11th-hour threat of taking over the city if Lewis George won might have helped her.
• "It motivated people to get to the polls," Lewis George told reporters on Election Night. The sentiment she heard from some voters: "You know what, if Trump doesn't like you, I love you."
