D.C.'s FIFA Fan Zone opened on the National Mall yesterday for the World Cup.
The vibe: A cool — well, actually very hot, mid-heat wave — gathering spot for tourists and soccer fans, with a front-row view of the Capitol.
The deets: Shade is at a premium, and the best seats are umbrella-covered picnic tables. Otherwise, you're baking in the sun or staking out a tree on the sidelines.
Kiosks are hawking $5 waters, beers ($12-$14) and other coolers like frozen lemonades ($6).
A quick taste test turned up what may be D.C.'s worst chicken Caesar wrap ($21 with tip) — dry, gristly, weirdly honey mustard-ed. Pizza slices ($8+) and hot dogs ($5) looked better.
As for the soccer, they're showing a ton of games, plus all Team USA, even if they're late.
The real draw is the crowd. Global visitors sported national team jerseys, while kids kicked soccer balls — the kind of scene that makes you love the World's Game.
❄️ Anna's thought bubble: I'd return for a big match after sunset.
But between the metal detectors and bag checks, the not-so-central location, and food and drink prices that outpace the quality, I'd take an air-conditioned bar most always.
