Law enforcement surges for D.C. summer celebrations

State of play: The next few months, expect to see more special police vehicles on downtown streets as agencies flood the zone, from horse-mounted officers to counter-sniper teams and bomb-sniffing canines.

• Secret Service takes the lead on Fourth of July, designating it as a National Special Security Event for the first time in D.C., usually reserved for occasions like a presidential inauguration.
• With the World Cup watch party and Great American State Fair also on the Washington Monument grounds, fireworks watchers that night will have less room for lawn chairs and throwing down blankets.
• Magnetometers will screen anyone entering the area, said Tara McLeese, special agent with the Secret Service, at a press conference on Tuesday.

What they're saying: "The Fourth of July celebration will look and feel very different," McLeese said.

The big picture: President Trump plans to double the National Guard deployment to 5,000 troops, part of a summer surge that includes officers from federal agencies.

• City police plan to coordinate with federal law enforcement, including the FBI and the recently expanded ranks of the U.S. Park Police.

What we're watching: Officials said on Tuesday they continue to investigate a fuel spill on the National Mall, which organizers blamed on a saboteur cutting a fuel line connected to equipment for 250th celebrations.

• More than 30 gallons of fuel spilled, seeping into the Mall's underground rainwater collection tanks, NBC News reported.
