D.C. mayoral candidates sharpen final messages

Zoom in: Asked to outline their first affordability initiative as mayor, McDuffie pivoted at a recent Fox 5 debate, saying his first 90 days hinge on "making sure we keep people safe."

• Lewis George said the city's "affordability crisis" calls for building more housing and expanding a child care subsidy, which she previously said might take a new tax on certain businesses.
• Despite D.C.'s lagging construction sector, both McDuffie and Lewis George share a desire to build more housing (12,000 new units by 2030 for McDuffie; 72,000 units within five years for Lewis George).

Between the lines: The campaign contrasts are clear in television spending and in the final stump speeches.

• McDuffie casts Lewis George's ideas for expanding government programs as imports from more affluent New York City. She slams his campaign for taking contributions from some Trump donors, saying she'd be tougher on the president.
