Chic sushi and cocktails just hit 14th Street: Katsumi — a neon-lit Japanese restaurant and bar — is the latest splashy opening from the team behind Bar Chinois.
Why it matters: The top-tier talent, including chef Masaaki "Uchi" Uchino, formerly of Michelin-starred Sushi Nakazawa, and bar star Andra "AJ" Johnson.
The backstory: The spot debuted as Bar Japonais but pivoted once Uchino came aboard, leaning fully into sushi and Japanese plates.
Dig in: Uchino, a Fukuoka native, is known for traditional omakase at his other concept, Kyomi (opening downtown soon).
Katsumi's menu is more casual and fusion-minded — think elaborate sashimi plates, homemade soba noodles, ample vegetarian options and sushi rolls inspired by the viral caviar-and-potato-chip snack.
To drink: Seasonal sakes and playful cocktails — including a Japanese spin on a piña colada with aged coconut rum, mango, pineapple and adzuki bean paste.
