Juneberry Garage, a new tavern inside an old Walter Reed mechanic shop, just opened its vintage garage doors.
Why it matters: The owners of Ivy and Coney and Midlands Beer Garden came together for this new spot — which makes it essentially the child of D.C. bar royalty.
Flashback: The 1940s building near Shepherd Park once housed a gas station and hobby garage for Walter Reed personnel.
- It's now a retro-cozy, indoor-outdoor space overlooking a huge lawn where guests can cozy up with spiked ciders under blankets.
Dig in: The family-friendly menu is Midwestern, just like the owners.
- Think Chicago-style tavern pizzas (thin 'n' crispy), homemade sodas (which you can spike), sausages, mac salad and snacks.
🧀 And yes, $1 cheese balls — an Ivy and Coney tradition — rolled over here.
The intrigue: Like at their other places, the owners wanted to keep things affordable. Cocktails — a fun mix of classics, hot drinks and spritzes — are $11-$13.
- Food won't break the bank, either. We're eyeing the $10 chili half-smoke, $12 fried mortadella sandwich and $21 "party cut" sausage-pepper pie.
Between the lines: The owners all opened Kangaroo Boxing Club (RIP) together in their 20s. Partner Robin Webb tells Axios that Juneberry is a "more chill" version now that they're older.
- "We just want to be that approachable place that brings people together, whether it's first dates or family dinners."
