Grab your popcorn, cinephiles — there are several film festivals around Washington this weekend if you want to movie out.
Why it matters: Getting out of the house to support filmmakers > Netflix and chill.
State of play: There are three local flick fests to check out this weekend:
🍿 Alexandria Film Festival: Catch over 60 movies playing at venues across Alexandria from Friday to Sunday, with options ranging from a Leonardo DiCaprio-produced documentary to a family flick about golf.
- Plus: Half of the picks come from local filmmakers, who will do Q&As after their screenings.
- And furloughed feds get free tix. ($15 per movie ticket, $80 for festival passes)
🎥 HBCU First Look Film Festival: Thursday to Saturday, head to Howard for this festival featuring work from up-and-coming student filmmakers at HBCUs.
- There will also be industry panels with celebs like actress and producer Marsai Martin, plus workshops and mixers. ($20 for students, $40 general admission)
🎬 Wheaton Film Festival: Short films are the name of the game at this Maryland festival taking place Saturday, with many of the filmmakers hailing from Montgomery County.
- Before the screenings, movie buffs can attend panels and networking events. After, stick around for the awards show. (Tickets $34)

🍽️ Capital Food Fight: D.C. Central Kitchen's yearly fundraiser is back Thursday at The Wharf, with a local chef face-off, bites from area restaurants, and big-name appearances from the likes of Ryan Zimmerman. (Ticket prices vary)
🍻 D.C. Beer Festival: Get hoppy at this Nats Park beer bonanza on Saturday featuring unlimited sips from over 80 craft brewers, live tunes, a dueling piano bar, and food trucks. (General admission tickets $66, VIP $105)
🖼️ "Out of Many: Reframing an American Art Collection": A new exhibit opens at the Phillips Collection on Saturday, marking America's upcoming 250th birthday via a series of works that examine U.S. history. (Ticket prices vary)
🎤 Noochie's "Live from the Front Porch": The D.C. performer is bringing his viral concert series all the way from his family's local front porch to the Kennedy Center on Sunday. (Tickets start at $39)
🎉 Pippi Longstocking bash: D.C. Public Libraries and the Swedish Embassy are teaming up Sunday at MLK Library to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the iconic Swedish children's book character with story time, birthday cake, and music. (Free, registration required)
