Some Washingtonians are choosing to protest rather than rest this Labor Day weekend, using it as a chance to clap back against President Trump's crackdown on D.C.
Why it matters: It's the latest show of local resistance to the Trump administration's federal oversight of the District, which continues to escalate.
The big picture: This comes at the end of a summer that's seen other large-scale protests against Trump and his policies, like the "No Kings" protests in June that drew millions of people nationwide.
- Meanwhile, a slew of protests have occurred across Washington since Trump began his crackdown this month.
State of play: A massive, countrywide protest against the Trump administration will take place on Labor Day, with several events in the DMV.
- The "Workers Over Billionaires" protest is organized by the group May Day Strong and the AFL-CIO for "working people" to push back against "the billionaire takeover."
Local rallies are planned for Monday in spots including Alexandria, where demonstrators are gathering to support local immigrant communities, and Silver Spring, where protesters will wave signs near the Beltway.
- The weekend of protest kicked off Thursday, when unions from across the Washington area gathered for a solidarity rally in Dupont Circle.
There will also be a "D.C. Freedom Run" on Monday, where joggers and walkers will gather at the intersection of 14th and U Streets Northwest for either a 4.5- or 2.5-mile route through the District while sporting resistance signs or shirts.
- Participants should deck themselves out in red or white to rep D.C., organizers said, and the first 51 attendees will get free shirts.
Meanwhile, Washingtonians are still gathering nightly around 8pm to make noise in protest of the takeover.
The other side: Last week, Trump aide Stephen Miller called those protesting the D.C. crackdown "elderly white hippies" and "crazy communists."
- Trump has pushed back on rallies against him, warning ahead of the "No Kings" protests in June that "people that want to protest will be met with big force."
What we're watching: Free D.C. and the Sunrise Movement are planning a student walkout in D.C. on Sept. 9 to protest the crackdown.
- Students outside the District can sign a petition in support of advocates.
