D.C. has the highest gender pay gap in the DMV, according to 2023 census data.
By the numbers: The median pay for D.C. working women in 2023 was about $15,500 less than for men, according to data from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey.
- In Maryland, the pay gap is closer to $11,000. In Virginia, it's under $15,000.
Yes, but: The District's median income is among the highest in the country, over $81,000 in 2023. Men made an average $91,000, and women over $75,000.
Zoom out: The pay gender gap has narrowed the U.S. over the past 20-odd years, according to Pew analysis. Last year, women earned an average of 85% of what men earned, compared to 81% in 2003.
