March is becoming Maryland's month

For the first time in school history, the Terps men's and women's basketball teams have both made the Sweet 16.

Why it matters: Just three other schools pulled that off this year — Duke, Tennessee and Ole Miss.

More than a decade after joining the Big Ten, it's a sign that Maryland is finally becoming one of the conference's basketball powerhouses.

The latest: The women's team came back to win one of the best games of the tournament so far, a 111-108 double-overtime victory over Alabama on Monday.

The Terps were down 17 at one point, but senior guards Sarah Te-Biasu and Shyanne Sellers each scored more than 25 to help complete the upset.
The program has now made the Sweet 16 for the fourth time in five years, per ESPN.

Meanwhile, the men's basketball team advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2016 after center Derik Queen nailed a tough jumper at the buzzer to beat Colorado State on Sunday.

The fearless freshman averages 16 points and nine rebounds per game and is quickly becoming one of the darlings of this year's tournament.

When asked after the game where his confidence comes from, Queen said: "I'm from Baltimore, that's why."

What's next: Both teams now have to face vaunted No. 1 seeds that will be difficult tests.

The men play Florida Thursday at 7:39pm in San Francisco, with coverage on TBS.
The women take on South Carolina and legendary coach Dawn Staley Friday at 5pm in Birmingham, with coverage on ESPN.
