DC dials up security for Trump inauguration with drones, massive fencing

By the numbers: There are 250,000 ticketed guests, and thousands more are expected on the National Mall on Jan. 20, U.S. Capitol Police chief Thomas Manger said at a press conference Monday.

• There will be over 25,000 law enforcement and military personnel — including 4,000 officers coming in from other cities and 7,800 National Guard members.
• 30 miles of anti-scale fencing will be installed, the most ever for an inauguration.
• Drones will assist in surveillance.

Metro service will open early at 4am on inauguration day, but some downtown stations will be closed:

• McPherson Square, Federal Triangle, and Smithsonian (Blue, Orange and Silver lines)
• Mount Vernon Square and Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter (Green and Yellow lines)
• See inauguration.dc.gov for service adjustments and partial closures at other stations.

Meanwhile, Mayor Muriel Bowser defended spending $1.5 million on an inaugural parade viewing stand outside D.C.'s city hall at the John A. Wilson Building. Axios reported last week many Democratic council members are noncommittal on attending.

• "I hate that the costs have escalated," she acknowledged, but added, "I think it's important to do it every four years."
