This new Anacostia wellness space has matcha, yoga and tons of plants

• But they always knew they wanted to open a brick-and-mortar spot.
• "This is our way of having a home base where our community can convene and feel grounded in real life," Hemsley tells Axios.

The two locals — Doswell grew up in Alexandria, and Hemsely in D.C. — were intentional in picking Anacostia.

• The majority of the population in Wards 7 and 8 is Black, and the area has seen higher rates of food deserts, poverty and poor health outcomes.
• The owners didn't want residents to feel they had to cross the river to find wellness-focused food and nature-filled spaces. "[We asked], 'Who needs our space the most?,'" says Doswell.

State of play: Visitors can stop by the green-filled space to purchase plants, grab avocado toast and a matcha latte in the cafe, or take a class in its wellness studio, with offerings like yoga, sound healing and meditation.

• Local chef Erik Bruner-Yang, behind D.C. spots like Maketto, advised the two owners on the project.

Plus: The group also hosts events like guided hikes, rock-climbing outings and pottery workshops.

• Memberships are available, say the owners, with access to classes and the cafe.

Context: The duo estimates they've shipped over 30,000 plants since launching in 2020, and they've partnered with brands like Arcteryx, Madwell and Dove.

• They've sent plants to celebrities like Simone Biles, Gabrielle Union and Lizzo, say the owners, and D.C. singer-songwriter Ari Lennox wrote a tribute to the group.
• They also help corporations add greenery to their offices via their "Planterior Design Services.".
