Early voting centers open in D.C.

State of play: Nearly 76,500 ballots have been cast in D.C. as of Friday, via ballot drop-off boxes or postal mail.

• For context, about 346,500 ballots were cast in the 2020 general election.

How it works: All registered voters in D.C. were sent a mail ballot, which can continue to be put into drop boxes or sent via USPS.

• Starting today, 25 early vote centers will open across the city, from 8:30am to 7pm. Residents can cast their ballots in person and also register to vote if needed.

Zoom out: Maryland opened its early voting centers for the presidential general election last Thursday.

• On Saturday, Virginia's in-person early voting expanded to local voter registration offices.
