Holiday reading list: New books out by DMV authors

"Happiness Falls" by Angie Kim

• The father of a Korean American family in Northern Virginia disappears one day, and the only person who was with him is his son, who has Angelman syndrome and is nonspeaking. As his daughter looks into his disappearance, she uncovers truths about her family along the way.
• Kim moved from Seoul as a child and lives in Northern Virginia.

"The Rom Con" by Devon Daniels

• When a journalist uses the rules from an outdated 1950s dating guide on her arch-rival for an ironic piece about how awful the book is, she's surprised when they actually work — and that she finds herself potentially liking the guy.
• Daniels lives in Odenton, Md.

"Rebecca, Not Becky" by Christine Platt and Catherine Wigginton Greene

• Out next Tuesday, this book follows a Black mother who relocates to a predominately white D.C. suburb and encounters a white mother who, eager to prove she's a champion of antiracism, befriends her with uncomfortably ardent enthusiasm.
• Both authors live in D.C. — Platt is an author and Baldwin for the Arts' interim executive director, and Greene is a writer and documentary filmmaker and leads antiracism workshops.
