Newly-elected Minnesota state legislators have selected their caucus leaders.

Why it matters: Leaders set the DFL and GOP legislative agendas and negotiate with the governor on the budget and other policy.

What happened: Majority House Democrats voted to give current Leader Zack Stephenson the speaker's gavel. Senate Democrats re-elected majority leader Erin Murphy.

Republicans tapped Jordan Rasmusson as Senate minority leader and Harry Niska as minority leader in the House.

Worth noting: Senate Democrats also picked Sen. Scott Dibble to serve as chair of the powerful tax committee, following the retirement of longtime Chair Ann Rest.

Senate President Bobby Joe Champion and Finance Chair John Marty will continue in their posts.

Plus: DFL Rep. Jamie Long will resume his past role as House majority leader.
