Amy Klobuchar wins Minnesota governor's race

• She will be the first woman governor in the state's history.

Driving the news: Unofficial results show Klobuchar defeating Republican state House Speaker Lisa Demuth.

• "Whether or not I got your vote, I will give you my best," Klobuchar told supporters at an election night event.

Catch up quick: Klobuchar, one of the state's most popular politicians, launched her campaign in late January, shortly after Walz reversed course and dropped his bid for an unprecedented third consecutive term.

• Her entrance into the race complicated state Republicans' efforts to capitalize on Walz's declining approval ratings to win the governorship for the first time in 20 years.

What's next: Klobuchar has promised to conduct a top-to-bottom audit of state government and to replace leaders at fraud-plagued agencies.

What we're watching: Either Klobuchar or Walz will appoint an interim U.S. senator to fill her seat, depending on when she steps down.

• A special election will be held in November 2027 to fill the remainder of her term.
