Big vote totals in the Twin Cities and surrounding suburbs fueled Lisa Demuth and Peggy Flanagan's landslide wins in their respective GOP gubernatorial and DFL U.S. Senate primaries.
Why it matters: Minnesotans living in the vote-heavy metro will play a pivotal role in picking the winners of the high-stakes races for governor and U.S. senator this fall.

Zoom in: Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, the DFL's U.S. Senate nominee, carried Ramsey and Hennepin counties by over 95,000 votes as she sailed to a 20-point victory.
- Lisa Demuth also carried all seven metro counties by comfortable margins in her resounding win in the GOP gubernatorial primary race.
The intrigue: Flanagan also outperformed moderate rival Angie Craig in much of Greater Minnesota, despite Craig's contention that she'd be a stronger candidate outside the metro.
Between the lines: Flanagan was the favorite in her race heading into the primary, but polls showed a much closer race than the trouncing she delivered.
- Demuth's commanding win over rivals backed by President Trump and her own party was less certain, given past GOP primary trends.
Worth noting: DFL gubernatorial nominee Amy Klobuchar and GOP U.S. Senate nominee Michele Tafoya also cruised to victory in the metro in their respective races, though neither faced stiff competition.
