Former NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya will be the GOP nominee for Minnesota's open U.S. Senate seat, the AP projects.

Why it matters: Name recognition and a big fundraising advantage helped propel Tafoya to victory despite losing the Minnesota Republican Party endorsement this spring.

Driving the news: Tafoya easily topped a crowded field that included Adam Schwarze, a veteran endorsed by the Minnesota Republican Party, and 2024 U.S. Senate nominee Royce White.

What's next: Tafoya will face the winner of the DFL primary on the November ballot.
