Alums of the Divine 9 historically Black fraternities and sororities may soon have a new way to rep their membership on the road.
Driving the news: DFL Rep. Cedrick Frazier recently introduced a bill that would create new specialty license plates honoring the National Pan-Hellenic Councilorganizations.
Details: The bill directs the Department of Driver and Vehicle Services to offer plates featuring emblems and mottos of eligible fraternities and sororities that request a design.
It's modeled after a law in Illinois, where motorists can purchase plates honoring any of the nine Greek organizations.
Follow the money: Like with many other specialty plates, a portion of the fees paid by the driver would go to charities run by the represented groups.
What they're saying: Frazier, himself an alum of a local Phi Beta Sigma chapter, said the move would recognize a tradition of "mentorship, service, advocacy, and education [that] directly contributed to the social and economic mobility of Black Minnesotans for generations."
What's next: The proposal would need to clear both chambers to become law.
