Loons land international star James Rodríguez

Minnesota United FC signed a deal to bring one of the big names in international soccer to St. Paul: James Rodríguez.

Why it matters: "Minnesota is looking to play a more expansive style under new manager Cameron Knowles, and Rodríguez's creativity would aid in that goal," ESPN's Jeff Carlisle wrote.

Flashback: Rodríguez shined for Colombia in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but has bounced around international soccer lately, playing for six different teams over the last six seasons.

Between the lines: MNUFC announced that Rodriguez signed a short-term deal that would keep the 34-year-old with the Loons through this summer's World Cup, where Rodríguez is expected to play a major role for a Colombia team that could make a deep run.

The deal could be extended into December.

What we're watching: Minnesota's season begins Feb. 21 in Austin. The home opener is Feb. 28.
