Season's first snow could gunk up holiday travel

The rain in Tuesday's forecast will to turn to snow at night, bringing the Twin Cities its first accumulation of the season — right in time for peak holiday travel.

The latest: The National Weather Service has expanded a winter storm warning to cover the Twin Cities because a system it's been tracking has shifted south.

It expects most of the metro will get to 4 to 6 inches of snow by Wednesday morning, with higher totals in the northern suburbs and central Minnesota.

Threat level: With strong winds and temperatures expected to plunge into the 20s tomorrow, watch for slick pavement. The first snowfall is always a doozy, as many roads are not yet salted.

Zoom out: The Twin Cities are in the center of a mass of cold air expected to cover much of the U.S. during the long holiday weekend. There could also be snow in the Mountain West and Great Lakes regions.

What's ahead: Even colder air for the Twin Cities this weekend and beyond. A high of 17 on Sunday will feel balmy compared to Dec. 5, when we might get our first below-zero temperatures.

The bottom line: Sunday's high of 56 broke a daily record for MSP.
