The City of Minneapolis is doing away with its bicycle registry and asking owners to instead submit their serial numbers to the nonprofit Bike Index.
Driving the shift: The city said it created its registry before the rise of better national databases.
How it works: The site, which claims to have the highest bike theft recovery rate of any registration service, allows users to alert law enforcement, pawn shops and social media users if their ride has been stolen.
