Corporations call workers back to office, but not CEOs

Some of Minnesota's top CEOs live out of state, even as their companies tighten return-to-office mandates for employees.

Why it matters: In addition to dampening morale, CEOs who live out of state may be hurting company performance, according to a Boston College/Arizona State study.

State of play: The Star Tribune reports that Minnesota has a lower rate of "fly-in CEOs" than neighboring states.

Yes, but: At least two large corporations tightening their return-to-work policies have CEOs who live elsewhere.

• Target CEO Brian Cornell is registered to vote in Florida, according to state records, though he also has a condo in Wayzata.
• Ameriprise CEO James Cracchiolo lives in New Jersey.
• Plus, recently retired UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty did not live in Minnesota, according to the Strib.

The other side: University of Minnesota professor Myles Shaver told the paper that, given all the travel CEOs do, it's irrelevant where they live.

• Ameriprise, the Strib notes, has been one of the state's best-performing companies with Cracchiolo at the helm.
