Alleged shooter of Minnesota lawmaker appears in federal court

The man who prosecutors say assassinated a top Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband appeared Monday in federal court in St. Paul.

The big picture: Vance Luther Boelter, 57, is charged with federal murder, stalking, and firearm offenses in the killing of state House Democratic Leader Melissa Hortman and her husband, as well as the wounding state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife.

What happened: Boelter did not enter a plea in his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge John Docherty.

• Boelter informed the judge that he earned $540 a week from his part-time job, had paid off his home, held between $20,000 and $30,000 in his bank accounts, and had seven vehicles registered in his name.
• Wearing an orange jumpsuit, but not handcuffs, Boelter answered most questions from U.S. Magistrate Judge John Docherty in brief, businesslike answers such as "Yes, sir" and "No, sir."

He also clarified the pronunciation of his name: Belter. "The 'O' is silent," he said.
