Worthy of your time: The Strib's "Ghost of a Chance" podcast

• Star Tribune reporter Eric Roper bought the Robinsons' home in 2020 and spent the last five years researching their lives.

Why it matters: As the podcast details, Black residents were excluded from good jobs and certain neighborhoods. Later, they were boxed out of Southwest Minneapolis by a freeway.

• The Robinsons worked hard and managed to buy a house in what is now the Kingfield neighborhood. In 1920, they were one of just 12 Black families in Southwest Minneapolis — yet white protest groups still emerged to try to purge them from the neighborhood, and to prevent other Black families from moving in.

What they're saying: This was a "key moment when the first generation of Black people born free from slavery could have built wealth and passed it on to future generations. Instead they were held back and hemmed into segregated neighborhoods," Roper wrote.
