As the dust settles from the shocking trade that will send Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks, the lingering question is what happens next.
Why it matters: The acquisition of Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo should keep the Wolves in the hunt again this upcoming season, but beyond that the future is much cloudier.
State of play: Randle, Rudy Gobert and Naz Reid can opt out of their contracts next summer, which would leave the Timberwolves without an accomplished post player.
What we're watching: Whether the Wolves try to extend the contracts of any of those three players, or whether they use them as trade pieces to further revamp the team.
The bottom line: The departure of Towns stings for a lot of fans who appreciated the big man's loyalty to Minnesota during some rough years early in his career.
But if the Wolves can use the $50 million-plus they were set to pay him each year to build a more balanced roster, then the move makes sense.
