Voters in Minneapolis and surrounding suburbs on Tuesday decided U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) should have another term in Congress.
The big picture: The prominent member of the progressive "Squad" faced a repeat challenge from Don Samuels, a moderate former Minneapolis City Council member who came within 2 points of victory in the 2022 primary.
Omar fended off the challenge from Samuels a second time.
Two other "Squad" members — Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri and Jamaal Bowman of New York— had separately lost their primaries this cycle.
Yes, but: The bitter rematch between Omar and Samuels didn't attract the same level of spending as Bush's and Bowman's.
The other side: Dalia al-Aqidi, an Iraqi-born immigrant who has worked as a journalist and an activist, will be the GOP nominee.
Zoom in: The 5th Congressional District includes Minneapolis, as well as the suburbs of Brooklyn Center, St. Louis Park, Richfield, Crystal, Robbinsdale, Golden Valley, New Hope and Fridley.
Between the lines: The winner of the Democratic primary was heavily favored to win the November election in the deep blue district.
