"Global" flavors, sesame crust will be top pizza topping trends for 2024, expert says

Move over, Margherita. A Minnesota pizza expert says bold, global flavors are growing in popularity.

The big picture: Colby Strilaeff, a brand manager with Austin-based Hormel Foods, predicts that chimichurri, gochujang and miso will be among the most popular toppings in 2024, the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reports.

Between the lines: Strilaeff, who released the trends during the March International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas, says more pizzerias are experimenting with Mexican, Cuban and Indian flavors.

Others are adding a flavor punch with hot oils, honeys and other toppings added after the pizza bakes.

Zoom in: Here are some of Strilaeff's other predictions for sought-after toppings:

"Ribbon" pepperoni cut into shreds instead of the traditional circles.
Giardiniera, aka pickled vegetables.
Sesame seed crust, which Strilaeff said adds an extra crunch and "delicious, nutty undertone."
