Kensington stars in a new San Diego slasher-romance film

San Diego's very own Kensington plays a starring role in a new slasher/romance movie.
The big picture: Producer Justin Burquist has lived in the Kensington neighborhood for 15 years and thought its cozy vibe would be perfect for "A Corpse in Kensington."
Slasher/romance? Yes, Burquist told Axios. It's about a Halloween killing spree that brings together three former high school classmates, who then rekindle their love triangle.
- He wouldn't give too much away, but said Kensington landmarks have a big part in the film.
- Other scenes were shot in Ramona.
The vibe: Director Brian Patrick Butler thought the neighborhood's tucked-away feel created the perfect setting.
- He and Burquist loved going to movies, especially midnight screenings, at the old Ken Cinema in the neighborhood.
- Butler has written two other films ("Friend of the World" and "Hemet, Landlady Don't Drink Tea"), both of which were also local productions.
Zoom in: The movie has horror elements, but also a lot of comedy, Burquist said.
- There's a lot of snappy dialogue between the three old flames, and it's a period piece set in the 2010s.
Context: It's easier to make film industry connections in Los Angeles, of course, but Burquist said San Diego's small independent scene is very supportive.
- "In some ways, it's harder, but in other ways, I think it's easier," he said.
Case in point: The police once pulled up and asked what they were doing while they were shooting a student film in an alley.
- "We said, 'Oh, we're shooting a film, and they're like, 'Oh, cool!' And then they just left," he said. "In LA, you would not get that."
What's next: The filmmakers are planning to submit to film festivals and hope to have a distribution deal soon.
- Just in time for Halloween.
