On a lighter note, I was prepared to wait months for a table at À L'ouest, the new French brasserie that opened in the heart of North Park in February.
But my husband and I snagged a reservation by signing up for alerts of last-minute openings and enjoyed one of the most delicious meals we've had in San Diego.
The vibe: The long-awaited, Parisian-inspired restaurant adds a contagious energy to the neighborhood's dining scene with a lively patio bar that makes you want to stop in.
The spacious bistro-style dining room filled with greenery, marble and chandeliers feels like a celebratory place to devour dishes by Chef Brad Wise, known for his charcoal and wood-fired cooking at some of the city's best restaurants.
Best bites: The Manila clams with basque sausage sit in a vermouth, herb butter broth that you'll want to soak up with the baguette.
The herb spätzle is like a cheesy, truffle-y risotto with braised rabbit and mushrooms.
The ratatouille, French onion soup with oxtail, and tender, saucy steak frites rounded out our memorable meal.
What's next: À L'ouest started serving brunch this month, and I'll be going back for that.
