More free parking for city residents at Balboa Park

Catch up quick: Visitors started paying for parking at Balboa Park and the zoo in January, but the new rules didn't go over well.

• Neighbors complained, local residents protested, museums reported attendance drops and parking kiosks were vandalized.
• Following the backlash, city officials modified the parking program to expand free parking for San Diego residents. Those changes are set to take effect March 2.

The latest: City residents verified through an online portal can park for free in Level 2 and Level 3 Balboa Park lots. Those are still $10 a day for nonresidents.

• The Palisades and Bea Evenson lots are reclassified as Level 2, so they'll also be free.
• Paid parking enforcement will end at 6pm instead of 8pm.

Residents and nonresidents will continue to pay to park in the Level 1 lots, which are the busiest, at $8/day and $16/day, respectively.

• Visitors can also buy monthly, quarterly and annual parking passes.
