Parking no longer free at Balboa Park or zoo

Between the lines: The council approved a parking plan for Balboa Park but had to work with the zoo separately on its rates.

Balboa Park: City residents will be verified through an online portal.

• City residents can pay $150 for annual passes, $60 for quarterly passes, and $30 for monthly passes.
• For visitors, the passes cost $300, $120 and $40, respectively.
• Special-events parking rates for organizations are $5 or $8 per space.
• Daily rates, which were set last fall, range from $5 to $8 for city residents and $10 to $16 for nonresidents, depending on the lot.
• Metered street parking will cost $2.50 per hour, with a $10 daily maximum.
• The first three hours of parking in the Lower Inspiration Point lot will be free.

Zoo: Parking is free for members, who need to register their vehicles online.

• Members can also register their cars using a QR code in the parking lot, at zoo kiosks, or by texting "1671" to 619-901-0402.
• You'll need your membership number, found under the barcode on your membership card.
• For nonmembers and non-San Diego residents, parking costs $16 a day.
• Parking for residents is $8 a day.
• You can pay at either a kiosk in the parking lot or on your phone.

Follow the money: The revenue generated will be spent on park services, maintenance and infrastructure, per the city.

• Zoo spokesperson Breen told Axios they're "still working out those details" on how zoo parking revenue will be shared.
