Try a NYC bodega specialty at Cloud 9 Deli downtown

I'll admit, I'm late to the chopped cheese game but I recently tried one at Cloud 9 Deli, which opened last year in East Village.

The verdict: I'm the sandwich's newest fan, and am now scoping out other local delis to try this New York City bodega specialty.

Dig in: Served on a toasted hoagie roll, this chopped cheese is a tasty blend of ribeye steak chopped like ground beef, grilled onions, grilled banana peppers, gooey cheddar, shredded lettuce, tomatoes and a garlic aioli that ties it all together without overpowering each bite.

• It's definitely hearty, as it should be at $15, but it won't require a post-lunch nap.
• Plus, it's served with a crisp pickle, and I complemented that with spicy dill pickle chips. Highly recommend.
• Cloud 9's stellar sandwiches are best enjoyed outside on the shaded patio.

Zoom out: You can find chopped cheeses at other spots too, including Lou's Deli in North Park, Regal Beagle in Little Italy, Hub Market in Gaslamp, Pepper Farm Deli in Santee and City Chopped Cheese, a food stand based in National City.
