The Brigantine, Inc. is looking to redevelop The Fish Market on the Embarcadero into a dining destination with multiple new food concepts.
Why it matters: The proposed $25.5 million project, called The Landing, would attract more locals and tourists to eat, drink, shop and stroll around the downtown waterfront.
Driving the news: The Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners voted Tuesday to start the environmental review process for the project, but there are several other steps necessary for full approval and permits to get before construction can start.
- The Brigantine restaurant group took over The Fish Market's two locations and Top of the Market earlier this year.
- The group is seeking a new 40-year lease agreement with this new investment, Brigantine President Mike Morton Jr. told the Union-Tribune.
- Construction is expected to start in March 2028, with an opening date set for spring or summer in 2029, per the U-T.
Zoom in: Brigantine plans to replace the existing restaurant with a new, two-story building that has three restaurants with indoor and outdoor patio dining, as well as five banquet rooms for private events.
- There's also a planned waterfront walkway around the property that would be open to the public.
🐟 The new Fish Market will be a casual seafood restaurant with bay views.
🎣 The fast-casual Little Market will offer fresh fish with dine-in and grab-and-go options, plus breakfast, coffee and gelato.
🥩 Salt & Sear Prime Steak House will be an upscale surf 'n turf restaurant with an extensive wine list and views of the USS Midway Museum.

The big picture: The family-owned company has been developing and operating local restaurants for more than 50 years.
- It currently runs about 20 eateries, including the Brigantine Seafood & Oyster Bar locations, Miguel's Cocina, Topsail, Portside Coffee & Gelato, Ketch Brewing and Ketch Grill and Taps.
What's next: The Landing project will be subject to review under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the California Coastal Act, per the U-T.
