New roadway into SAN opens to ease congestion

The big picture: The project is part of the $3.8 billion Terminal 1 redevelopment, which is expected to unveil 19 new gates when its first phase opens in September.

• The airport opened a 2,400-space parking plaza in June as part of the revamp.
• A September 14 open house will be the first chance to see the new space.

The next phase of the project is expected in early 2028, after the airport demolishes the existing Terminal 1 to make way for 11 more gates.

Between the lines: The airport secured $300 million from airlines to pay for part of a long-sought rail connection to the airport.

• The redevelopment reserved land near the terminals for a transit station, but the connection is not close to becoming reality after tax measures that would have funded it were either rejected or failed to reach the ballot in 2024, 2022 and 2020.
• The airlines' funding commitment expires in 2029, but airport officials say they would intend to renegotiate the same deal at that point.
