California State Parks Foundation opens photo contest

How it works: Participants can submit up to three photos in each of the five categories highlighting scenic landscapes, wildlife, recreational activities, people, and cultural and historical sites.

• The contest is open now through Sept. 30.

The intrigue: If you're looking for inspo, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is the best spot for wildflowers, according to the foundation's recent "Best of" poll.

• The Salton Sea State Recreation Area is a birdwatcher's paradise and Torrey Pines State Beach is a favorite for picnics.

State of play: California residents can get a Library Parks Pass from local branches for free parking at those sites and about 200 more statewide.

• The equity-focused program was at risk due to state budget cuts, but funding was restored through 2026.
