San Diego's $25 minimum wage for tourism workers heads to full City Council vote

Driving the news: The city's special committee on cost-of-living issues unanimously passed the "hospitality minimum wage ordinance" Wednesday.

• The new $25 wage would apply to hotel, event center, amusement park and janitorial workers in those locations, and would adjust with inflation annually.

State of play: The new wage would be a roughly 45% increase over the current $17.25 general minimum wage in San Diego.

• The city's effort follows similar pushes in Long Beach and Los Angeles.

The other side: Officials from the Padres, the Chamber of Commerce, hotel associations and regional economic development groups have all argued against passing a policy that targets one sector of the economy.

• Those business leaders have threatened to collect enough signatures to force a public vote, repeating what business groups did following a general minimum wage hike in 2014.

What's next: It could get a full City Council vote as early as Septmber, then needs a signature from Mayor Todd Gloria.
