Scoop: Alex Morgan joins San Diego Wave FC as a minority investor

State of play: She joins the Wave's ownership as a minority investor, the club and its owners, the Levine Leichtman family, announced Tuesday.

What she's saying: "San Diego is where I've built my home, where I am raising my children, and found a purpose beyond my playing career," Morgan said in a statement. "I believed in Wave FC before a single match was played, and I still believe this Club has the power to change the future of women's sports."

• The team's controlling owner Lauren Leichtman said Morgan "used her platform to lead, to advocate, and to build something meaningful in San Diego. Her decision to invest is not only a continuation of her leadership but also a reflection of her belief in what we are building."

Catch up quick: Morgan was one of the original players signed to the Wave ahead of the team's inaugural season in 2022, when it became the first expansion team in NWSL history to qualify for the playoffs.

• She led the team to its first trophy in 2023 and helped drive record-breaking attendance at Snapdragon Stadium.
• The two-time World Cup Champion retired from professional soccer in September 2024, as the Wave's all-time leading scorer and assist leader.

Off the field, Morgan's advocacy and entrepreneurship has helped grow women's sports and achieve equal pay in U.S. Soccer.

• She co-founded TOGETHXR and Trybe Ventures, launched the Alex Morgan Foundation and invested in the Unrivaled women's basketball league.
