Soccer icon Alex Morgan to retire, play final game Sunday

• The face of American soccer for a generation has also been the face of San Diego Wave FC since she arrived in town in 2021 and began setting NWSL attendance records.
• Morgan's 224 international appearances is ninth all-time in USWNT history.

Driving the news: Morgan also announced Thursday that she is pregnant with her second child, and that Sunday's 5pm game against the North Carolina Courage at Snapdragon Stadium will be her last.

What she's saying: "I'm retiring. And I have so much clarity about this decision," she said in a video. "At the beginning of 2024, I felt in my heart and soul that this was the last season that I would play soccer."

• "Soccer has been a part of me for 30 years, and it was one of the first things that I have ever loved," the 35-year-old said. "And I gave everything to this sport, and what I got in return was more than I could have ever dreamed of."

Catch up quick: Morgan played her first USWNT game in 2010, before winning a gold medal with the team in 2012 and back-to-back World Cups in 2015 and 2019.

• She gave birth to her first child in 2020, and returned to USWNT five months later.
